It's on Stevens Creek Blvd. close to De Anza College and has been there much longer than the glitzier Panera and Peet's which are now adjacent. In the olden days (ie about a year or so ago), when you went for the buffet lunch, you seated yourself, eventually someone would nod at you and acknowledge your presence, and bring you water and MAYBE ask for a drink order; and after you had stuffed yourself, a small old Indian lady in a sari would decide what you owed and collect money from you. No signs. No menus. Just a tasty buffet.

That has all changed. A few months ago when Beth and I went for lunch the ambiance was totally different. Newly painted, fresh tablecloths, nice waiters, a bigger buffet moved to the back nook, and when we arrived at 11:30 it was not yet ready. We were brought drinks during our wait, and before the food line opened, the place started filling up! As we had been the first people in, we were sent to the buffet first, a nice gesture. And the quality of the food was much higher than it had been in the past.

Fast forward to Wednesday night. I had purchased a Groupon for dinner at Bombay Oven a few weeks ago, so we decided to give it a try. The place is very comfortable, with a pleasant dining room, painted a soft yellow and with low music playing. Several families were there but it was not crowded. Our young waiter was very friendly and helpful. We ordered an appetizer and three dishes to share, plus naan. The appetizer was something I'd never had before but highly recommend---honey cauliflower. Think slightly sweet, savory popcorn cauliflower. Yum. The main dishes were the house curry chicken, butter chicken, and bhindi masala (okra). Michael was a big fan of the curry, which I also liked, but butter chicken just makes my mouth happy. I think the only place where I've had any butter chicken that was better is at Amber India, where it is a signature dish. The quantities were large enough that we were able to bring home more than enough for lunch the next day.

Now for my Okla/Ark/Texas families: Okra. You think fried okra is the best thing on earth. Well you know I do, at least. Let me tell you, okra masala as cooked at Bombay Oven rivals any okra dish I've ever had. The okra is fresh, cut like we do to fry it, sauteed with onions, tomato, and spices. It was crisp, smooth, fresh, spicy, all at once. I promise, if any of you come to visit, this will be a stop on the food tour.

I asked our waiter if he eats okra, feeling that possibly even Indian gourmets might have mixed feelings about this vegetable. But he assured me that he did, and that in his country there is a belief that eating okra will make you smart in mathematics. I told Michael that it must not have worked on me and he replied, think how much worse you might have been in math if you HADN'T eaten it all your childhood! Touche.

AHS Class of 1961 Group Photo

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 256px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2BJuYA7WEEU/TfpkAoglbqI/AAAAAAAAMp8/pQh7yHglKAk/s320/2011-06-04%2BDSC_8365%2B8x10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5618913447134981794" />

Susan Miller, Charlene Goss, Carrol Evans, Oras Rainer, Thomas Berryhill, Linda Presley, Darryl Hunkapillar, Mary Walters, Suzy Russell, Charlotte Brown, Joe Pap, Judy Means, Janice Barnes, Harvey Colley, Cherry Jeffrey, Karen Haston, Mike Howie, Judy Nutt, Freida Clay, Diann Thompson, Jesse Reed, Linda Briscoe, Marvin Witt, Lynn Paschall, Danny Heartsill, Shirley Lewis, Barbara O'Brien, Tanya Jackson, Trudie McCreight, Linda Collins, Dorothy Royall, Phyllis Hignight, Sharon Wiggins, Linda Painter, Linda Lanphere, John Burton, Phyllis Hamilton, Carol Carlock, Sandra Fisher, Jim Porter, Carol Daube, Bill Thomas, Midge Ledbetter, Sharon King, Jane Robbins, Carl Holliday, Karen Adams, Terry Gutshall, Charles Rice, Sharon Halstead, Doyle Williams, Lynda Jones, Bob Williams, Kenneth James, Gary Grider, Mary Beth Osborn, Carolyn Kinkade, Jan Pruitt

Katie and Laura at Katie's wedding

http://www.wpja.com/contests/49-2011-q1-contest/06-emotion.html#10

Friends sharing happiness and joy. In April we went to another buffet, this time to Athidhi, located in the shopping center at the corner of Wolfe and Old San Francisco Road. The address is 727 S. Wolfe Rd but the restaurant is in the strip that faces Old San Francisco. We got there at the end of the lunch time; well actually, we got there after the end of the lunch time. Their web page said lunch from 11 until 3 but that is only on weekends. Weekdays they close at 2:30. The host was gracious enough to seat us anyway, and there was still an ample quantity of delicious food.

We thoroughly enjoyed all the variety of curries and masalas and tandoori. Michael was brave enough to try the goat curry which he thought was quite yummy. The dessert choices were completely different. There was some fresh melon and a pudding but no gulab in honey sauce. There were gulab with a savory filling in the entree section. I think they had run out of dosa before we got there.

We both felt this was a good balance of spicy, a little hotter than Taste Buds, and way spicier than Ganesha. It was a much bigger buffet than Taste Buds, with an assortment of south specialties added to the mix. Again, we got fresh hot naan brought to the table. The place had several small altars and posters for a variety of gurus. It obviously has a spiritual clientele.

There was a long gap between Athidhi and our next choice, Shalimar, located on El Camino near Bernardo. We think the building used to be a Sizzler or something similar. Shalimar bills itself as Indian and Pakistani food. The parking lot was full and there was a big, fairly noisy crowd. It is NOT a buffet at lunch. They have a large menu posted on the counter with pictures of food. It would be best to go there with a group and order a variety of dishes to share. We did not think to do this and as a result had two identical entrees. Both of us ordered Saag chicken, which was basically chicken chunks in a spinach base. We also ordered naan. The chicken was delicious although it was a challenge to eat that much spinach, even dipping the naan in it. Michael liked ordering a single dish because we did not leave the restaurant stuffed as we usually do after a buffet. Next time we'll try 2 entrees. This would also be a good place to order take-out.

For those of you looking to get good deals on local restaurants, I recommend checking out Groupon. I have a coupon waiting to be used for Bombay Oven on Stevens Creek and there are frequently deals for new and newly remodeled places.

Trying to Sync

What a wonderful reunion we had last weekend in Ardmore! I only wish I could have talked more with everyone there and taken even more pictures.

If you took photos, please add them to the album, I sent the link to everyone who left their email address for the directory. This turns out to be a big undertaking as there are many new places.

So far:

Last week we started with Ganesha Indian Cuisine in Santa Clara. Located in the Kiely Plaza at the intersection of Kiely and Benton, this was certainly not the closest or the best known in our area. It WAS, however, the one featured in a Groupon coupon. We went for the lunch buffet. Because we don't have to do prime time, we were a little late and were the only customers in the restaurant. The decor was very very pleasant; nice blond wood chairs, very clean, soothing wall color, flat panel tv playing an Indian music channel. It suited a western aesthetic while still reflecting Indian culture.

The buffet had the standard choices. Stand outs were the very fresh salad ingredients: lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, with raita to use as a dressing; the butter chicken; the rice pudding and gulab; the tandoori chicken; and the very best garlic and plain naan, brought hot to the table. The server--possibly the owner--was preoccupied with working with a web designer (I think), but was very very friendly and prompt when we needed him. And it WAS way after the lunch hour.

We did notice that the food, while very flavorful, was NOT hot-spicy. We are accustomed to more heat, but the flavors were very good.

I think the combination of the pleasing decor, the naan, and the mild spices would make this an extremely accessible place to non-Indian customers. We will definitely return. This would be a good place to take newbies to Indian cuisine.

Week Two:

Tuesday night I went online and did some research into the Indian restaurants we pass by daily. They are a mix of north and south Indian cuisine. (More on that later). After reading recommendations I chose Taste Buds Indian Restaurant on Grape in Sunnyvale (across from Lozano's). We went there today, once again at the end of the lunch hour for the buffet. The reviews on Yelp were good, and indicated that it had expanded the seating area.

Good thing.

The original space had room for a small buffet counter and seating for maybe 16. They've added a big room with 2 long rows of tables for 4. There is NO decor. None. Nothing on walls. No TV. No music. They might have started as a take-out place, not sure.

But the food was good. Again, the buffet was a typical mix of curries or masalas, mostly vegetarian. The only meat dishes were butter chicken and tandoori chicken. The sauces were spicy, hot but not fiery, The butter chicken sauce was also used in a cauliflower dish and was super yummy. Again, freshly cooked naan was brought to the table. Maybe this has become a standard? I hadn't experienced it before. My personal favorite dish was the okra. I asked what it was called and told "okra". When I looked puzzled the woman on the counter added masala. So I will call it okra masala. Any good Okie would love it. Michael was less entranced.

The dessert, kheer, was extremely good. It was made with vermicelli, almonds, and lots of cardamom. I understand the name and the ingredients change from region to region in India. At Ganesha it was rice pudding, sweet, creamy, not spicy at all. At Taste Buds the experience was completely different. Of course I liked both, but I was enthralled with the one today.

Wrap-up: two good places, similar food, although spiced differently. Very different decor (or lack thereof). Taste Buds was closer to us and cheaper. I can see us making it a regular place for lunch.

Next week I think we will try someplace that specializes in south Indian cuisine--dosas and idly and such. There was a spurt in early spring and summer, then nada. Don't think I will go backwards, at least not right now.

But, since this is named for the multiple eye surgeries it does seem appropriate to update that stuff. Right eye, not working so well. Left eye, dimming some, and plagued this week with blepharitis (think pink eye of the eyelashes). Lots of diligent eyelash cleaning, and extra soothing eyedrops have eased the pain somewhat. But the real drama is over whether to get a lens implant in the right lensless eye. I have now seen yet another specialist about that, and been bounced back once again to my primary care optometrist. I need to call him this week and see what the "team" is concluding. The girls think there should be a facebook group, "I have worked on JMo's eye!"

Halloween was fun, what with the birthday trip to see Wicked and the birthday party for Baby Kate. I didn't take any photos at either place. :(

Look for another post tomorrow.

Great Restaurants, part two: Memorial Day Weekend

In addition to the glorius Chez Panisse, we have been to an incredible number of good Bay Area restaurants in the past month.

First up was Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay where we celebrated Kelly's birthday. The meal started with oysters on the half shell, now that I had learned they are really quite the treat. We had an assortment which gave us a chance to discover that we really all prefer the small ones. Kelly, Cynthia, Marina, Laura and I were all brave enough to eat more than one. Sascha was brave enough to sit at the same table while we were slurping them down.

The list of varieties:
Steamboat WA
Kumamoto OR
Marin Miyagi CA
Malpeque PEI
Beausoleil NB
Fanny Bay BC

I think the Kumamota were our favorites.

The following day Michael and I headed off to Big Sur for my birthday-present weekend from Laura. On the way to Treebones we stopped at Nepenthe in Big Sur. Check out the stories and folktales on their website. Truly Nepenthe is in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. We basked in the sun, looking at the coast line and trying to keep the ravens and jays from eating all the french fries. It's hard to do a food review of a hamburger, but their burger, called ambrosia, was quite fine. And they served a huge half order of fries. Our Nepenthe pictures can be found at http://picasaweb.google.com/judy.mowrey/Nepenthe.

Our destination was Treebones Resort, also in Big Sur, but further south, out of the really wooded area. For those familiar with the Central California coast, Treebones is south of Limekiln State Park and the stop in the road called Lucia. The entire resort is constructed of yurts. The lodge is a series of connected wooden yurts, the owners also live in a wood structure, and the guesthouse where we stayed is made of wood. The rest of the yurts are canvas sided with a central skylight. Breakfast was served every morning in the lodge and consisted of homemade granola and waffles. On Monday evening we ate in the lodge as well. They have a limited menu and require orders to be placed between 4 and 7 pm. We opted to try the chicken tagine. It was excellent, flavorful and very very tender chicken, with apricots and almonds, and served with couscous and a salad.
My pictures can be found at picasaweb as well. Michael still needs to upload his photos from the hike he went on.

Still to come:
South in San Francisco (part of the Dine About Town program)
The Ritz Carlton in San Francisco for High Tea

There is still one more birthday event, not a restaurant but a show---Spam-a-lot in San Francisco.

What a way to celebrate!

Chez Panisse in the Spring

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 168px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NLsFn3HSaFI/SetwF_DwPHI/AAAAAAAAEr4/JbC2u5GAYPY/s200/ChezPanisse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326474232424578162" />
I am so grateful to Rick, Kelly, and Susan for making my long-time wish to eat at Chez Panisse a reality. It was wonderful start to finish. Now, at the risk of sounding greedy, I want to go back at least once every season! The spring menu matched what I have been getting in the Two Small Farms produce box, and what we see currently in the farmers markets, and I am sure the same would hold true in other seasons. It was wonderful to get to taste what the others ordered. I had never eaten an oyster on the half shell but thanks to Kelly now I know they are incomparable. And I probably wouldn't have tried an entire plate of bone marrow bones but the bite from Rick's bone marrow plate was also exquisite. Susan's shoestring potatoes, more like crispy slivers, were marvelous.

My choices were the citrus salad: slim slices of blood orange, tangerines, and larger oranges, dressed lightly with a cilantro pesto and ginger vinaigrette, sprinkled with spicy pistachios; a semolina based soup made with green garlic (which has been in our box for the past few weeks) and fresh peas; a pizza with spring onions, olives, and capers, with a fragrence so heady it permeated the house when I brought the leftovers in; and for dessert a delicate rhubarb tart with an amazingly flavored cream.

The portions were just the right size, not overwhelmingly large, making it possible to enjoy everything we tried.

The restaurant is a perfect Berkeley place, craftsman design with a treehouse feeling in one of the rooms.

Now I am eager to try many of the recipes and techniques in the cookbook, "The Art of Simple Food."

Again, thanks to all for a very very special afternoon!

Los Cabos, Life in the Sun, Feb 2009

These aren't captioned yet but I think you can guess. The Lord of the Rings trilogy should be read AND seen for example.

Conversely, which book should NEVER have been introduced to celluloid?
Kite Runner

Who is the person whose book advice you'll always take?
Most of my book club buddies are amazing in their recommendations!

starts with the letter J

Rules: It's harder than it looks! First nausea, then more pain, then more pain, lots of sleeping...too many kinds of eyedrops. I am becoming an eyedrop expert. Homatropine is the very strangest one. If you check it in the PDR, the term coming up is "can cause mental confusion." My ophthalmologist said maybe a better term is psychosis. Definitely it gave me nightmares of grotesque creatures.

Now that I am better it is a relief to be only comparing the healing properties of artificial tears. It is important to use preservative free tears, which come in individual vials. That goes against my nature, to have all that extra packaging, but that is the only way to get no preservatives. I have been using thera tears regular and liquid gel, tears naturalle, and now a stronger one, refresh celluvisc. The active ingredient is the same as the thera tears liquid gel but it feels better in my eyes.

My ophthalmologist has a new web page.

Here we go again, number 4...but who's counting?

This afternoon is surgery number 4. This is what I think is going to be done, but we'll see when it is over:

repair the detached retina

try to repair the hole one more time

remove the lens

use silicon oil to tamp down

place (is that the term?) a scleral buckle

I am not at all sure what the recovery time will be for this set of wonders. And gentle reader, happen it did, but to no positive end. However, since my whole goal with this blog was to document what it was like, now I will try to reconnect with some of the events of the past six weeks and lead up to where I am now rather than going through all the current gloom immediately.

First, the surgery really wasn't scheduled for 3 pm. That was wishful thinking on someone's part. At any rate it didn't happen until after 5 pm. I think the surgery itself went smoothly from all I can tell. This time the admitting nurse was a real nervous nellie who for some reason kept forgetting I was there--after SAYING to me that she often forgot to do the eye drops in a timely fashion, she proceeded to disappear for over an hour. During that hour I was sure the IV was pushing fluids directly into bone, leading me to push the call button to get help--not from nn as it happened, but from someone else. Fortunately I was moved down to the OR pre-op soon after the IV incident where the nurse finally did the eye drops. Also, the anesthesiologist was good and gave me all the good stuff so no nausea or anxiety. Yay!

Now to face down. The pillow construction system was in place and certainly worked better than the rental stuff from before. The small buckwheat pillow and the two curved pillows for between the legs were the major helpers. I could use the curved pillows all sorts of ways to support my face yet keep pressure off the sinuses.

Thanks also to Michael for my iPod playing system which enabled me to listed to some hella long books!

Surgery Today

This time it appears the hospital has been giving me wrong info all week. Wish me luck!

Sunday Gloomy Sunday

There are still a large number of loose ends that need to be done before Tuesday but I have lost heart. They were very helpful, shipped all of it in a timely fashion, we got it all set up. We even moved a twin bed into the family room so I could sleep any time without disturbing others. I had my iPod, my mirror for the TV, a radio with remote controls, a speaker phone. Nothing was going to faze me. But little did I know that none of the equipment would provide comfort in any extended way once my face had been pointed downward long enough for all the sinus cavities to fill up! So this time I was armed with questions when I went for the pre-op physical, such as what decongestants are safe (sudafed is fine the doctor said, even with my borderline hypertension), would an antihistamine help (yes, says the kind doctor again, as long as the ophthalmologist oks it), and is there a muscle relaxer that might knock me out enough to really sleep.(Maybe) Now the pharmaceutics are better prepared at least.

Next I went on a field trip to a medical supply place locally that handles vitrectomy face-down equipment (and massage creams, as the face-down stuff is really just massage table stuff). There I met the medical supply dominatrix queen--no, none of it is comfortable--yes, I do sell foam pads covered with nasty hard naugahyde--you, you scummy person with a macular hole, prepare to be miserable. So a pox on her house. May she someday have to use her own equipment for months! We're off to Bed Bath and Beyond on a pillow scavenger hunt. Came out of there with
2 Contour® Memory Foam Leg Pillows.

2 Therapedic™ Memory Touch Neck Pillows

1 Symphony Pillow by Tempur-Pedic®

I pondered whether to get a body pillow but was holding out for a large u-shaped pillow I had seen in the skymall catalog on the way back from Holland. Found it the next day online and it is headed for Sunnyvale now.

All this should make it possible to build a nest in the bed, but in order to sit comfortably, I still needed to deal with the massage chair. Luckily, the folks at Vitrectomy Solutions had all my insurance and shipping info on file so a quick call to them was enough to start the shipping process for the seated solution. They will also ship me the magic mirror. Last time it was the most important part of the system, because I could force myself to keep my nose pointed into it even while sitting in the arm chair.

What is the Whole Face-Down Time Gonna Be Like?

I should have I should have I should have written about this before, like maybe the FIRST time I found out there was such a thing as a vitrectomy and that recovery would involve keeping one's nose pointed to the ground. But no, not so smart. So VxOne slid past any documentation when it happened last October. Then VxTwo didn't seen to be such a big deal because there was going to be no face-down component. Wrong again. Thus there is no documentation of what it felt like to have silicon oil in the eye, completely blurry vision, brain aches. Now VxThree is coming right up, face-down again, so I feel compelled, even obligated to chronicle the fun and games.
